The Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) held the 2018 tripartite new year meeting at the Post Tower in Jung-gu, Seoul on January 5th (Fri.).

* The tripartite new year meeting, attended by representatives of workers, employers and the government, has been held at the beginning of every year since 1985.

More than 300 people, including Employment and Labor Minister Kim Young-joo, FKTU president Kim Ju-young, KEF vice chairman Kim Young-bae, the Korea Business Women Federation's president Park Chan-jae, the Korean Women Entrepreneurs Association's chairwoman Han Moo-kyung, chairman of the Association of High Potential Enterprises of Korea Kang Ho-gap, chairman of the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee Hong Young-pyo and other tripartite representatives, heads of related organizations and institutions and academics, attended the meeting to exchange new year's greetings with one another.

In her remarks, Minister Kim said, "I wish Korea to become a society that respects labor and is centered on people in the year 2018."

She went on to say, "I ask people from all walks of life, including labor and business circles, to join forces to ensure that employment and labor policies can spread across workplaces and thus produce visible outcomes."

Meanwhile, she said, "Now that the two umbrella unions' leadership reshuffle has been completed with the election of new KCTU officials late last year, it is hoped that the tripartite partners at the Economic and Social Development Commission will resume their social dialogue and reach a social agreement that meets the nation's expectations, so that they can wisely resolve pending labor issues."

She emphasized once again that this year MOEL would put all its energy into pursuing policies that can change people's lives and give them actual help, as she said in her new year address.

The main participants also exchanged words of blessing, wishing one another a hopeful new year.

The meeting, which also included a congratulatory cake-cutting ceremony to solidify tripartite harmony and a performance by the National Orchestra of Korea, provided a meaningful opportunity for tripartite partners to commit themselves to creating a caring world together.
