Professor Chung Chin-sung of Seoul National University appointed as member of the ILO Global Commission on the Future of Work

The International Labour Organization (ILO) has appointed Chung Chin-sung, a professor of sociology at Seoul National University, as a member of the Global Commission on the Future of Work officially launched on August 21st (Mon.).

 

The ILO held the launch ceremony, presided over by Ameenah Gurib-Fakim, President of the Republic of Mauritius, and Stefan Lofven, Prime Minister of Sweden, both co-chairpersons of the Commission, in Geneva, Switzerland, and released a full list of Commission members. 

 

* The full member list was released on August 21st at 15:00 (Geneva time, at 22:00 Korea time).

 

The Commission, composed of about 20 prominent figures from relevant fields, will produce a report that will be discussed by tripartite constituents at the session of the International Labour Conference in 2019 marking the ILO's 100th anniversary.

 

The Future of Work Initiative is one of the seven Centenary Initiatives* ILO Director-General Guy Ryder has been advocating since he took office.

 

* Future of Work Initiative, End to Poverty Initiative, Women at Work Initiative,  Enterprises Initiative, Green Initiative, Standards Initiative and Governance Initiative

 

This initiative is about analyzing the changes the fourth industrial revolution, climate change, labour migration, etc., may bring to employment and labor markets and establishing comprehensive response plans.

 

Professor Chung Chin-sung has carried out many activities at home and abroad in the fields of human rights and women. She will also serve as a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination from 2018. 

 

When the ILO established the World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization in 2002, Chung Eui-yong, the then Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea in Geneva, joined the Commission as an ex-officio member.
